The University of Philippines Los Baņos (UPLB) is located in a suburban town, which 63 km. away from international airport in Manila. It is nestled at the foot of Mt. Makiling, the site of well-preserved forest that is a home to a large proportion of the country's richly deserve plants and animal life (including bees). Blessed with a mild climate, UPLB, the leading agricultural university of the Philippines, is located in the town of Los Baņos, which also plays host to the International Rice Research Institute, and various national and international agencies - a science city, tourist spot and garden town visited from afar. This ideal home for bees (as well as people) is also located along the shores of Laguna de Bay, the largest inland body of water in the Philippines. In addition to being home for the national coordinating center for beekeeping research and extension, UPLB should also be of great interest to apiculturists because it is easily accessible to large, organized commercial farms utilizing both indigenous and introduces bee species - a concrete example of the success of joint efforts by the academe, beekeepers and government. All of this, in a venue just next door to the capital and airport.
