Makiling Center for Mountain Ecosystems

The Makiling Center for Mountain Ecosystems (MCME) will hold the First National Conference on the Science and Management of Mountain Ecosystems (SAMME'99) on 27-28 May 1999.

This conference is in support of the objectives set forth in Section 13 of Agenda 21, the global action plan adopted at the 1992 Earth Summit. It is also in preparation for the celebration of the year 2002, recently declared by the United Nations as the International Year of the Mountains.

Conference Objective

The main objective of SAMME'99 is to seek a common understanding on mountain environments in the Philippines and the extent of the current knowledge on their biological and landscape diversity, as well as the strategies implemented for their conservation and sustainable management.

Venue

SAMME'99 will take place at the College of Forestry and Natural Resources, The University of the Philippines - Los Baños, Laguna. The College sits on the gentle, north-eastern slopes of one of the best-known mountain ecosystems in South East Asia and in the Philippines — the mythical and beautiful Mt Makiling.

Accommodation during the conference (single and twin-sharing rooms) will be available at the TREES Hostel adjacent to the conference venue. Contact the conference secretariat for early bookings.

Registration Fee

The registration fee of PhP 1,950.00 is inclusive of attendance at all conference sessions, an opening reception, snacks and meals for 27-28 May 1999, conference kit and the conference proceedings (when published). Payments may be in cash or cheque made payable to UPLB Foundation, Inc.

Special Events

Photo Essay Contest: There will be a photo essay contest and exhibit on ‘Mountains of the Philippine Islands’. The conference organising committee will be offering an award of PhP 10,000 for the best and original presentation about a Philippine mountain by a participating group. For details of the photo essay contest please contact MCME.

Post-Conference Trek:For interested participants, there will be a post-conference trek to the summit of Mt Makiling on Saturday, 29th May 1999.
