Local
racers dominate Maquiling Quest 2004 Los Baños- based multi-sports athletes took advantage of
their familiarity of the local terrain and designated route to bag the
top prizes in this year’s Maquiling
Quest adventure race held September 18, 2004. Team
Trantados of Omar Paredes, Brian Caintic and Reva Magno finished first
after 5 hours, 57 minutes and 52 seconds and took home a trophy plus
Php25,000 cash. The
Makiling Runners of Edison Ticzon, Myra Abueg and Bitoy Glindro clocked
6 hours, 14 minutes and 26 seconds and won a second prize trophy plus
Php15,000 cash. Team Lagalag Torogi composed of Levi Nayahangan, Feliz
Nepomuceno and Andrew Chinalpan came to a respectable third overall in 6
hours, 43 minutes and 10 seconds and were awared Php10,000 cash and a
trophy. Twelve teams from
Metro Manila and nearby provinces participated in the race. The race flagged off at the Los Baños Municipal hall and
followed a 30-kilometer course traversing the town proper, Laguna de
Bay, UPLB campus and the northern slopes of Mt. Makiling. Racers passed through 15 control points by running, boat
paddling, railways trolley riding, mountain biking, orienteering,
rappelling, swimming, and wood plank walking. Palm broom making, tree
identification, seedling potting and tree planting topped up the
eco-challenge activities. Prizes and logistics support were provided by the Los Baños Mayor’s Office, Smart Communications, PowerAde, Montanara Outdoor Wear, Ihaw Express, Greenwich, and Arisabel HotSpring Resort. The event was covered and aired by ABS-CBN Studio 23. Dr. Jose Sargento and Mr. Boboy Francisco served as Event Coordinator and Race Director, respectively.
