Iren Rua Falls
History

The town of Cavinti derived its name from the Tagalog phrase "kabit sa binti." This was the belief of the Aetas, who where the first settlers of the town, that a female who is about to be married must be chased by her groom in the forest until they reach the riverbank. As the groom captures his bride by holding her leg, they have to fall in the river. The people in the riverbank who are witnessing the romantic union shall celebrate by shouting "Kabit sa binti! Kabit sa binti!" Later on, the river will also be the place for the wedding ceremony and the vicinity was called "Kabit sa binti." As time passed, "Kabit sa binti" became "Kabinti" for easier pronunciation and later still, the spelling was changed to Cavinti.

About town

Nestled at the foothills of the Sierra Madre Mountain Range, Cavinti is generally a hilly area. It is bounded by the municipalities of Lumban and Kalayaan on the north, by Luisiana on the South, on the west by Pagsanjan and on the east by Mauban and Sampaloc, Quezon.

Agriculture is also the major economic base of the municipality. Very few commercial establishments can be found at the center of the town.

Sites
Lake Caliraya

One of the historical landmarks of the town is the church in the poblacion, which was built in the 1700s. Another feature of the town is the Japanese garden, a memorial park and burial place of the Japanese soldiers who fought and died in Cavinti during the Second World War. Moreover, it was said that the grave of General Yamashita was found in the garden. Located at barangay K. Talaongan, the garden functions today as a park, picnic area and playground for locals and tourists alike. Also, Caliraya is best known today for its man-made attraction, the Lake Caliraya.

Where to Stay/ Where to Eat

The lake resources of Cavinti and the nearby town of Lumban, namely Lumot, Putala, Kastila and the Caliraya lake, which are the prime tourist attractions of the town, triggered the establishment of resorts to provide accommodations to tourists or visitors of the place. These are the Lagos del Sol resort and the Surf Camp resort, both of which have amenities like hotel rooms and restaurants where visitors can enjoy a day of fun and relaxation.

Business

Agriculture is the major economic base of the municipality. Coconut farming is the main source of livelihood followed by rice and other agricultural crops such as pandan, rootcrops and fruit trees.

Cottage industry also dominated most of the agro-industry. It is further subdivided into weaving, wine bottling, fan making, rattan craft making, paper mache and other home décor. Pandan handicraft production produces hat and mat.

Leisure

The 4 lake resources (Caliraya, Lumot, Putala and Kastila Lake) and the magnificent view of Cavinti are its main tourist attractions.

Four other establishments have been built to provide an avenue for fun and recreation for the people of Cavinti. These are Lagos del Sol Resort, Caliraya-Hilltop Resort, Surf Camp and the Japanese Garden.

Lagos del Sol Resort

The Lagos del Sol Resort is a four-star resort located at Barangay K. Talaongan. It has 56 hotel rooms (46 air conditioned and 10 non-air conditioned rooms), 10 cottages, a restaurant, a swimming pool, Jacuzzis, tennis courts and billiard tables. For water sport enthusiasts, speedboats, jet skis, canoes, sea cycles, dragon boats and floating houses are available.

Caliraya Hilltop Resort
Caliraya Hilltop Resort has 20 hotel rooms, a swimming pool and a restaurant as part of its amenities. Other features include boat rentals for fishing and rowing, basketball courts, tennis courts, horseback riding facilities, and picnic grounds.

Caliraya Hilltop covers a land area of about 29 hectares but only 7 hectares is used for the resort; the remaining land is devoted for farming purposes. Thus, this place is a resort-farm in nature.

At present, the owner is developing some portions of the farm into a golf course.

Surf Camp
The Surf Camp, which is also located at Barangay K. Talaongan, provides facilities not only for wind surfing but also for boating, canoeing, and other forms of water sports.

Japanese Garden
Also in Barangay K. Talaongan is the Japanese Garden, covering about 12 hectares of land. Unlike the other resorts which is best for boating and other water-related activities, the Japanese Garden is a memorial park and the burial place of the Japanese soldiers who fought and died here during the Second World War. Moreover, the grave of General Yamashita can be found here.

The place was donated by the Japanese Memorial Garden Construction Committee in 1076 and is presently managed by the National Power Corporation (NAPOCOR).
