His Holiness, Pope John Paul II
Incarnationis Mysterium
Bull of Indiction of the Great Jubilee Year 2000
Conditions for Gaining the Jubilee Indulgence

The whole Jubilee journey, prepared for by pilgrimage, has its starting point and its conclusion the celebration of the Sacraments of Penance and of the Eucharist: this is the transforming encounter which opens us to the gift of the indulgence for ourselves and for others.
After worthily celebrating the sacramental confession, according to the norms of Canon 960 of the Code of Canon Law and of Canon 720 of the Code of Canons of the Eastern Churches, the faithful can receive or apply the gift of the plenary indulgence, if they make sacred pilgrimage to one of the four Patriarchal Basilicas and other Shrines in Rome, to the three Basilicas in the Holy Land and to the Cathedral Church and other Churches and places designated by the Ordinary in other Ecclesiastical Teritories, and there take part devoutly in Holy Mass or another liturgical celebration such as Lauds or Vespers, or some pious exercise (e.g., Stations of the Cross, the Rosary, the recitation of the  Akathistos Hymn in honour of the Mother of God); furthermore, if they visit, as a group or individually, one of the Basilicas, Cathedrals, Churches and there spend some time in Eucharistic adoration and pious meditations, ending with the "Our Father", the profession of faith in any approved form, and prayer to the Blessed Virgin Mary. the faithful can gain theplenary indulgence even daily but obviously not more than once a day.
Given in Rome, at St. Peter's and at the Apostolic Penitentiary, on 29 November 1998.
